In previous years we’ve descended on the Isle-of-Wight in May, to enjoy the sea air and “rolling” roads, with a welcome lunch at Off The Rails. An early casualty of the COVID restrictions, we’re working to reinstate the “Tour de Isle-of-Wight” as the 2020 WVCC Anniversary ride.
The Great COVID-19 Escape.
The previous two rides have been well attended, particularly for a long and challenging ride relatively early in the season, with variable weather conditions. As anyone who has attended these rides will attest, the island provides stunning scenery and challenging riding in equal measure!
The trip essentially provides a ride of two halves – punctuated by a wonderful lunch in relaxed surroundings – the optimism of riding to Yarmouth, followed by amazement at how many hills we can find on the return to Ryde.
The final route is currently being planned, in a possibly futile attempt to find a quiet and flat road back to Ryde, but will largely follow a similar path to the 2019 Route.
Logistics may be impacted slightly from previous years, with Wightlink suspending the Portsmouth>Ryde service due to low passenger volumes, but we’re hoping that it will restart shortly. In the ‘worst’ case, we may use the Portsmouth>Fishbourne crossing, which takes a further 20 minutes but is accepting foot passenger bookings and the cost is similar!
22nd August or 29th August?
We usually try to avoid the Bank Holiday weekend for obvious reasons, so currently the plan is for the 22nd August – however please feel free to provide feedback on your availability for either date.
Please sign-up to the ride on Strava if you plan to attend, so we can plan the travel logistics and more importantly, book the required number of tables at Off The Rails!
