Well you’re here, so I guess you’ve noticed! As well as a new meeting place for club rides, we have a new ‘digital home’ for keeping in touch with members and the cycling world.
Having tried various free applications and limited websites over the years we decided to dive right in and build our own club website. Whilst I suspect it may prove a labour of love, it has given us greater control over how we share information with all Club Members, so word of mouth and WhatsApp are perhaps no longer king. Although the WhatsApp group is still likely to be your best bet if lost in the ‘Newdigate triangle‘.
So as not to bore everyone with the technical details, if you can point or ‘click on it’ then go ahead and see what happens. We’ve tried to make the site interactive where it makes sense and within a short period it will also be fully “responsive”. Apparently that means it will adjust to different screen sizes, rather than talking back to you!
Whilst some of the site is primarily intended to attract new members, there is also a lot for existing members and we plan to use the ‘Members Section‘ to post the latest club news and updates. There is also a calendar for longer range planning of rides and social events, where we can share more detailed information than is currently possible from Strava.
Note however that for the time being we’ll continue to use Strava as the mechanism to sign-up to club rides and track rider numbers.
Over the coming weeks we will also expand the number of club routes posted on the site, with downloadable GPS route maps. We are currently copying our existing routes across to RideWithGPS as this provides better support for Garmin and Wahoo devices, though download links for routes will be provided for both sites.
There are a number of ‘bells and whistles’ that are worth trying. Some may prove to be useful, others a drain on time and performance. Over the next few months we’ll figure things out and there will likely be some updates towards the end of the summer, once we have everyone’s feedback.
The first change that we have planned is to switch on comments for feedback on club posts, and this will be done as soon as we’re confident that we have the right “cyber security” and “anti-spam” in place.
Some of the updates that will take place over the next few weeks:
- gradual replacement of images with club specific photo’s
- expansion of the Gallery to include more photo’s from club rides
- online order form for club kit
- make the site fully responsive for tablets and mobile phones
- build out of club routes and download links
- add details for club admins – they’re a bit shy currently
- anything else we can think of or based on comments!
My favourite bit of functionality? The “just the essentials” sidebar, to quickly catch-up on the latest club activity, upcoming rides and weather forecast.
